Teenage shooting sensation Manu Bhaker on Monday was named the Indian flag-bearer for the upcoming 3rd Youth Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Buenos Aires from October 6 to 18.
This was announced by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra at the send-off ceremony that the 16-year Bhaker would lead the Indian contingent in the opening ceremony.
“It is a great honour for me. I never expected to be the flag-bearer for the Indian contingent,” said Bhaker, as quoted by PTI.
Batra said, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce the young athletes’ participation in the Youth Olympic Games. May the Indian flag fly high and our athletes bring laurels for the country.”
A total of 68 members out of which there are 46 athletes would leave for Argentina on Tuesday to participate event.
Gurudutta D Bhakta, the secretary of the Goa Olympic Association would be the Chef-De-Mission of the Indian contingent.
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, along with IOA General Secretary Rajeev Mehta were among the ones to have attended the send-off ceremony.
Rathore, a former Olympic gold medallist had some words of praise for the Indian athletes.
He said, “Gone are the days when Indians participated in big multi-sport events just for the sake of participation. I know you all will give your best and bring medals for the country.”
