Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Sant Kabir’s Mazar in Magahar on Wednesday. When offered a fur skull cap, he refused to wear it.

Khadim Hussain, the caretaker of the mausoleum in Sant Kabir Nagar, said he had offered the cap (popularly known as Jinnah cap) but Yogi Adityanath refused politely. “He was smiling while saying no to me,” Hussain said.

The CM later agreed to hold the cap in his hands when the caretaker requested.

The caretaker later asked him to hold the cap in his hand, which the chief minister agreed to.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit on Thursday on the mystic poet-saints 500th death anniversary, Adityanath visited Kabir’s Math to review arrangements.

A similar incident happened with Modi too. In 2011, he refused to wear a skull cap offered to him by a cleric during a fast for social harmony in Ahmedabad, he, however, accepted a shawl instead.

Like Modi, Yogi Adityanath’s refusal too kicked up a row and did not go well with the opposition. Sunil Sajan, Samajwadi Party Spokesperson said, “He should not have gone to the mazar where it is mandatory as well as customary to wear a cap.”

Senior UP Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that it was just a gesture to pay respect. “The Chief Minister represents all communities. By wearing a cap for a minute as a mark of respect and gesture, it would not have changed his religion or hurt his religious sentiments,” Tiwari said.
