COVID-19: Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital Declared Containment Zone

The Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai has been declared a containment zone by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This happened after as many as 26 nurses and three doctors tested positive for COVID-19 in a span of one week. No entry or exit is allowed in the hospital by the administration until all the patient’s COVID-19 reports come out negative in two successive testings.

Vijay Khabale-Patil, chief public relations officer at BMC told TOI,”We have declared Wockhardt Hospital as a containment zone and have removed 30 doctors and nurses from there. We have shifted these covid-19 suspected cases to the Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai, where further tests will be carried out.

The nurses who tested positive for COVID-19 have been shifted to the hospital from their quarters in Vile Parle.  Two of the infected doctors are admitted in Seven Hills and one in SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim. Swab samples of more than 270 hospital staff and some patients have been sent for tests.

The source of the infection has been traced to a 70-year-old heart attack patient, who was tested positive for coronavirus on March 27. The two nurses who had attended to the elderly patient soon tested positive. Later several other nurses too began testing positive.

According to The Hindu’s report, the nurses of the hospital had alleged that they were not provided with personal protective equipment like the surgical or N95 masks while attending to the patients in the ICU. The hospital management has, however, refuted the charges.

The coronavirus death toll in Mumbai stood at 30 while the number of positive cases rose to 458, the highest in the state.
