Wimbledon 2018: Federer, Williams extends winning run to reach the quarter-finals

Roger Federer and Serena Williams progressed into the quarter-finals with straight game victory at Wimbledon on Monday.

Eight-time champions Federer continued to assert his dominance needing just 16 minutes to win the opening set in a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 victory against Adrian Mannarino, of France to reach his 16th Wimbledon quarter-final.

The straight-sets victory meant that Federer has now won 32 consecutive sets at the All England club and is just two behind from equalling his personal Wimbledon record, which he set between 2005 and 2006.

Federer, 36, also became the first man in the open era to play in 20 consecutive Wimbledons. He will be playing in his 53rd Grand Slam last-eight when he faces Gael Monfils of France or Kevin Andersom in the quarter-finals.

Serena Williams advance into quarter-finals

Serena Williams needed just over an hour as she raced into her 13th Wimbledon quarter-final beating Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-2 in just 62 minutes on Monday.

Williams, who won the Wimbledon title on her last two visits in 2015 and 2016, is now on an 18-match winning streak at the All England Club.

The  victory, her 90th Wimbledon win — the most among active female players — means Serena, currently 181st in the WTA rankings, will return to the top 100 next week.

The 36-year-old will next face Italian world number 52 Camila Giorgi on Tuesday for a place in the semi-finals.

Dominika Cibulkova overcame a delay to advance to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-1, straight set victory over Hsieh Su-Wei.

12th seed and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko raced into her second successive quarter-final with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-0, win against Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Monday.

Kiki Bertens continued het fairy-tale run knocking out Karolina Pliskova 6,-3, 7-6 (7/1), in the fourth round.

The 26-year-old who defeated Venus Williams in the previous round, sailed into her maiden quarter-finals. She will next face either Julia Goerges or Donna Vekic on Tuesday.
