In another gruesome case of mob-lynching that has come to light in West Bengal, a mentally deranged woman was brutally thrashed by locals on the suspicion of being a child-lifter.
Locals claimed that the woman was spotted several times in the locality in the past week and was seen luring children with candies.
“There have been incidents of child trafficking here. We found that the woman was carrying several candies,” Samir Roy, a resident of Barogharia said. The bruised woman was taken to a hospital yesterday and was released after initial treatment.
“We are investigating the incident. We have taken the mentally deranged woman into our custody,” Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Amitava Maity said.
A similar incident occured in West Bengal on July 3, 2017 as a mob pounced on a mentally ill woman at Sekendra village The woman had been living with her parents but wandered from her home to a nearby village.
Villagers spotted her walking into the home of local Dilip Ghosh with something in her hand. Local reports claimed that villagers feared the woman was holding a chloroform-soaked rag so she could abduct Ghosh’s young daughter.
A mob then rushed into the house and started beating her “mercilessly”. “Some youngsters ripped off the woman’s clothes and they shaved off her hair,” one resident told the Hindustan Times.“Then they tied her to a tractor and beat her for three hours.”
The mob jeering as the woman was attacked by the youngsters.
The woman reportedly tried to protest her innocence but onlookers could not understand what she was saying.
