West Bengal: State orders CID probe into students’ death in Islampur
The investigation into the death of two students in Islampur’s Daribhit High School has now been transferred to the CID of Kolkata Police. The investigation so far have been carried out by the state police. According to a notification from the state Home Secretary, the inquiry will now be taken over by the CID.
Discontent was brewing in the entire Islampur including the students and their relatives about the slow and ineffective probe into the death of Tapas Burman and Rajesh Sarkar. Local people have alleged that both were shot by the police during unrest at the Daribhit HS School regarding teacher recruitment.
Local residents had accused the police of killing two students from their area in North Bengal, but Jayanta Paul, DIG Raigunj range, denied the charge point blank. At the same time, The state failed to answer the question for a long time as to who shot at the students. Since then, the state police did arrest few, but nothing has come out of the probe.
After taking charge of the investigation, CID DIG Nishat Khan said that they are looking into the matter. “We have started probing the matter of Islampur and we are finding out what actually happened on that day,” Khan told reporters.
Meanwhile, BJP in West Bnegal, which called a Bandh on Wednesday, has sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killings that took place on September 20. Left with no option after protests and discontent, Trinamool Congress leaders Kanaiyalal Agarwal and Mohammad Gulam Rabbani have also demanded an independent inquiry just to curb the current uproar.
It may be recalled that the bandh disrupted the railway services at several points, which forced the Indian Railways to call off 46 pairs of trains in the Sealdah sub-division alone.
