West Bengal: 7 get life sentence for murder of constable Asim Dam
On Thursday, Barrackpore Sessions Judge Tapas Kumar Mitra has sentenced seven accused to life term for killing Asim Dam, who was attached to Entally police station of Kolkata police.
A day prior, the court had pronounced the seven accused- Abhijit Ghosh, Debu Mukherjee, Kuntal Chakraborti, Biswajit Ghosh, Botu Majumdar, Tapan Chandra and Prasenjit Dutta guilty of the offence of murder.
Six years ago, on the day of Holi celebrations, constable Asim Dam was at his residence at Bisharpara under Airport police station in North 24 Parganas district, when some miscreants entered his house and on the pretext of applying gulal, misbehaved with his niece and tried to molest her.
As Dam protested, the miscreants left the scene only to return with some more men and attacked Dam and his other family members with iron rods and sticks.
Because of which, Dam was grievously injured in the attack and died in hospital after two days on March 11.
Niece of Asim Dam, who was 19-years-old at the time of the incident said, “My uncle tried to stop the miscreants when they tried to molest me. As I called for help, all my other uncles also rushed but the miscreants had hit Asim uncle’s head.”
While one of the accused is still absconding, seven persons were named in the FIR and arrested and tried before the sessions court.
In a separate incident in Surat, the family members of a 50-year-old man in Surat repeatedly jumped on his chest until he died, in a bid to ward off evil, the police said today.
“Kumbhar’s three sons, including a minor, a daughter, his daughter-in-law and wife were arrested for allegedly killing him while performing black magic on him on Saturday night,” said police inspector SM Joshi.
