Ways to save electricity

Ways to save electricity

There are many ways you can save on your energy bills; you might be surprised at how small things there are that you can do to notch down your bill.

Here we give you some ideas on ways you can save on your electricity bill around the home.

1. Shut doors and close curtains

Where possible, shut doors to areas you are not using and only cool the rooms you spend the most time in. Make sure your curtains or blinds seal your windows properly and keep your curtains closed during the day when there is a heat-wave.

2. Run your fridge efficiently

Your fridge is always on, making it one of your most expensive appliances. Make sure the door seal is tight and free from gaps so cold air can’t escape. An ideal fridge temperature is 4 or 5 degrees and an ideal freezer temperature is minus 15 to minus 18 degrees Celsius.

3. Save energy in the kitchen

Thaw frozen food in your fridge to reduce cooking time. When you are cooking, use the microwave when you can – it uses much less energy than an electric oven. If you use the stove, keep lids on your pots to reduce cooking time. Use the economy cycle on your dishwasher and only run it when it’s full.

4. Compare energy retailers

Compare your energy retailers and check how much they charge per unit, if your energy retailer is charging you more, you know what to do.

5. Turn off unnecessary lights

Take advantage of the sun and rely on natural light as much as you can each day. When you do need to use the lights, remember to turn them off when you leave the room.

6. Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth

The water doesn’t need to flow when you are brushing your teeth or shaving, turn off the tap when you are brushing and turn it on when you need to use it.

7. Unplug unused electronics

Standby power can account for 10% of an average household’s annual electricity use.

8. Switch to energy saving light bulbs

If you haven’t switched to LED light bulbs, the time is now. LED light bulbs are much more energy efficient than traditional light bulbs. In fact, they use 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, which means big savings.

What are you waiting for, go make a change in your electricity bill.
