Kohli might have to take yo-yo test before West Indies series
Rested from the ongoing Asia Cup, India’s regular skipper Virat Kohli might just have to prove that he is fit by taking a yo-yo test before India take on the West Indies at home, reports suggest.
A report in the Navbharat Times states that the 29-year old is scheduled for a test on September 28 following which the selectors would pick the squad for the series against the West Indies.
The BCCI has made the yo-yo test a mandatory criterion for all the players so that they become eligible for national selection.
Head coach Ravi Shastri has always maintained that there can be no relaxations with any player when the yo-yo test is in question and history has also shown that players have missed out on getting picked for the national side because he has failed to clear the said test.
To be available for selection, an Indian cricketer has to score 16.1 in the test. Kohli, during the tour of England, had faced issues with a back problem and speaking on it, he had said, as quoted by The Indian Express,
“Yesterday and today, it wasn’t great. The back can be very tricky when it goes off. It happened in the latter half or the last leg of the South Africa tour when I missed a T20 game. That was very sudden, it happened a day before (the game).”
Besides Kohli, the selection committee would also have their eyes on Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma-both of whom were a part of the tour of England. While Ashwin had to sit out of a game owing to a side strain, Ishant played all five matches in the series.
