Virat Kohli fastest to reach 10,000 ODI runs surpassing Sachin Tendulkar

Indian skipper Virat Kohli added one more feather to his illustrious cap which he is going to remember for a long time as he became the fastest in ODI cricket to reach the 10,000-run mark. Kohli, en route to this terrific milestone, surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who earlier had held this record.

Tendulkar had scored 10,000 runs in ODI cricket on 31st March 2001 in a match against Australia and took a total of 259 innings to achieve this feat. Kohli, who is one of the best in modern-day cricket achieved this feat during the second one-dayer against the West Indies in Hyderabad and took just 205 innings to achieve this unique milestone.

When batting on 48, Kohli with 1,573 runs also broke Tendulkar’s record to score the most runs by an Indian batsman against the West Indies.

The 29-year old stylish right-hander now is the fifth Indian cricketer and the 13th in all of the international cricket to have scored 10,000 ODI runs.

Tendulkar with a tally of 18,426 runs still leads the table of highest One-Day runs. Kumar Sangakkara (14234 runs in 296 innings) and Ricky Ponting (13704 runs 266 innings) follow him as the second and third.

While Sri Lanka duo Sanath Jayasuriya (13430 runs in 328 innings ), Mahela Jayawardene (12650 runs in 333 innings), Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq (11739 runs in 299 innings), South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (11579 runs 272 innings), India’s Sourav Ganguly (11363 runs in 263 innings) and Rahul Dravid (10889 runs in 287 innings), West Indies’ Brian Lara (10405 runs in 278 innings), Tillakaratne Dilshan (10290 runs in 293 innings) and MS Dhoni (10123 runs in 278 innings) are the other batsman with 10,000 or more ODI runs.

A single off spin bowler Ashley Nurse was all that was needed for Kohli to etch his name in the record books after he had decided to bat first following a 140 in the first ODI.

The other four Indians in the list are Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni.
