Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 17-Year-Old Record

Indian captain Virat Kohli on Wednesday became the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs. He broke the record held by Sachin Tendulkar for last 17 years. The Master Blaster has held the record since 2001. Kohli clocked the milestone during the third and final match against Australia at the Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Kohli, needed 23 runs more to achieve the feat. He reached the mark in the first ball of the 12th over when he took a single off pacer Sean Abbott. Sachin Tendulkar had reached the mark in his 300th inning (341st ODI) when he had smashed a boundary against Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi at Centurion in 2003. Virat Kohli completed the feat in his 241st innings (251st ODI).

This feat has landed Virat Kohli in the elite club of Ricky Ponting, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya, and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene.

Kohli is also on the verge of equalling Sachin’s record of most ODI hundreds by an Indian player against Australia. If Kohli makes a ton, it will be his 9th ODI hundred against the Aussies.

But sadly he could not do so. With his dismissal for 63 on Wednesday, Kohli ended his 11-year streak of scoring ODI centuries in every calendar year since 2009.
