Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday praised the UK court’s decision to extradite the fugitive businessman liquor baron Vijay Mallya.
“The offender who benefited during the UPA rule is being brought to the book by the NDA government,” said Jaitley, hailing the decision.
Mallya has been charged with fraud and money laundering by the Indian enforcement agencies which amount to Rs 9,000 crore.

Judge Emma Arbuthnot directed the authorities to extradite Mallya to face the fraud charges in India. The owner of the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, however, has 14 days to appeal the court’s order.
Calling the Congress party as “culprits” who gave away loans to embattled businessmen. You created a situation in which people like these could prosper, and we have succeeded now in getting him back. It’s a proud moment for India,” he told news agency ANI.
Earlier, the Mallya had offered to pay the principal loan amount in full to the various banks he had the loan from. “Airlines struggling financially partly becoz of high ATF prices. Kingfisher was a fab airline that faced the highest ever crude prices of $ 140/barrel. Losses mounted and that’s where Banks money went. I have offered to repay 100 % of the Principal amount to them. Please take it,” he had said in a tweet.
The 62-year-old had also in the past denied any wrongdoing and blamed political influences of trying to accuse him in a fake case.
He was first nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress in early 2000 before he joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was relected to the upper house.
