Urmila Matondkar Joins Congress, Calls Rahul Gandhi Next Prime Minister

Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar has finally joined Congress Party today and likely to take on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Shetty. It is to be noted that she is the second Bollywood star to contest the Mumbai North seat after Govinda. Taking to Twitter, Urmila Matondkar has confirmed that she has joined Congress and called Congress President Rahul Gandhi India’s next Prime Minister.

Notably, Mumbai North constituency was once considered to be BJP bastion has always proved a tough constituency. Hence, Congress has fielded Urmila Matondkar to defeat the powerful leader Gopal Shetty. Earlier, Congress had fielded Govinda from the same constituency, who defeated senior BJP MP Ram Naik in 2004.

In the 2014 elections, Shetty had defeated the then-sitting Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam by more than 4,46,000 votes in 2014. It is to be noted that after a humiliating defeat in 2014, Nirupam has been trying to shift himself to the neighbouring Mumbai North-West constituency, where he has a strong base.

Earlier there were names of other actresses such as Asawari, Joshi, Shilpa Shinde were reported that they had also asked tickets from the Mumbai North constituency, but Congress does not seem to consider their names.

Talking about Urmila Matondkar’s acting career, she started her career as a child artist when she was just seven years old in a Marathi film, ”Zaakol” (1980). She got her first role in Bollywood in the Shashi Kapoor-Rekha starrer ‘Kalyug’ (1981).

Later, she worked with some of the biggest actors in major films like ”Dacait”, ”Bade Ghar Ki Beti”, ”Narasimha”, ”Chamatkar”, ”Aa Gale Lag Jaa” (paired opposite Jugal Hansraj, the child co-star of ‘Masoom”), ”Rangeela”, ”Indian”, ”Judaai”, ”Daud”, ”Satya”, ”Kaun”, ”Mast”, ”Dillagi”, ”Khoobsurat”, ”Jungle”, ”Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya”, ”Ek Hasina Thi”, ”Om Jai Jagadeesh”, ”Bhoot”, ”Pinjar”, ”Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara” and ‘Speed’.
