An under construction bridge collapsed in Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas on Monday morning, this was the third bridge collapse incident in West Bengal in a month. No injuries and casualty was reported.
In an earlier bridge collapse incident, 24 people were injured when a Majerhat bridge had collapsed on September 4, three days after another bridge had collapsed in Siliguri on September 7, leaving no one injured.
According to the report, local had pointed out many faults in the bridge which collapsed today, but their pleas go unheard. Local also said that there were fissures in the bridge which was coming up on Kalnagini river after that bridge collapsed.
Last week, Urban development minister Firhad Hakim had reportedly spotted the design of Chingrighata flyover to be faulty, following that plying buses and heavy vehicles have been stopped on it. Another crack was spotted in the Karunamayee bridge in South Kolkata, following which traffic movement had been restricted on it too.
Manturam Pakhira, minister for Sunderbans affairs department assured saying, the inquiry would be conducted and the guilty would not go unpunished.
