On August 13, student activist Shehla Rashid Shora allegedly received a threat from mafia don Ravi Poojary after which she filed a case in Srinagar on the same day when Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was attacked in Delhi.
Rashid took to Twitter, “FIR number 45/2018 u/s (under section) 506 RPC filed by J&K Police against Ravi Poojary on my complaint.”
According to the threat she alleged that Ravi Poojary had warned her, Khalid and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani to shut up.
“Meanwhile, got this death threat from right-wing Hindutvawadi fundamentalist Ravi Poojary. He warns Umar Khalid, Jignesh Mevani and me to shut up! Threat by SMS #DigitalIndia,” she said.
The screenshot of the message to student activist Rashid was put up on Twitter in which Poojary stated, “Just shut your mouth or we will shut your mouth forever. Tell Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mewani also. Mafia don Ravi Poojary”.
Earlier in the day, a gunshot was heard at the Constitution Club in the high security area near Parliament in Delhi when an unidentified man targeted Umar Khalid, who escaped unhurt, witnesses said. A CCTV grab of the suspect was acquired on August 14 on the CCTV camera installed at Vitthalbhai Patel Road.
Meanwhile, Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar called the attack on fellow student Umar Khalid an attempt to “stop us from reaching out to the masses” to educate them about the current political agenda.
Questions were also raised by him on the law and order situation in the national capital as the attack took place merely two days before Independence Day.
“August 15 is Independence Day and just two days before it, there is a deadly attack on a man in a high-security zone. This raises serious questions on the law and order situation,” Kumar told PTI.
“He had gone to an event which was about gaining freedom from fear. The attack was an attempt to create an atmosphere of fear. The incident shows that certain people are scared of those who talk about rights and justice. Unfortunately, the government is protecting those who have mob lynch mentality. Those who raise their voices are not being protected. A specific type of political agenda is being played out and there is an attempt to break those who talk about democracy and believe in non-violence. The social fabric is breaking and people should be told about it. Incidents like these are attempts to stop us from reaching out to common people,” he added.
