The officials from the health ministry revealed that the new mutant strain is highly infectious and spreads rapidly. The UK prime minister Boris Johnson affirmed that the new strain is spreading at an alarming rate and has therefore imposed a strict lockdown in Britain.
The Indian health ministry has revealed that between November 25 to December 23, 33,000 passengers came from the UK. They are being tracked subjected to RT-PCR tests by states and Union Territories. This step is to set up a preventive strategy and contain the mutant variant.
The new mutant strain of positive Covid-19 samples are being tested at 10 INSACOG labs (NIBMG Kolkata, ILS Bhubaneswar, NIV Pune, NCCS Pune, CCMB Hyderabad, CDFD Hyderabad, InSTEM Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, IGIB Delhi and NCDC Delhi) for genome sequencing.
To curb the spread of the new mutant strain government has suspended flights from the UK.
Not only India, even Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, but Lebanon and Singapore have also reported the presence of the UK variant genome.
