A 40-year-old woman was tied to a tree, beaten and forced to wear a garland of shoes for allegedly having an illicit relationship with a neighbour in Tripura, reported the police on Thursday.
The shocking incident took place on Wednesday said a senior police officer, also adding that the victim, a mother of two has registered a complaint at the Birganj police station, where she has named three women of assaulting her and leading the mob against her.
Narrating her ordeal, the woman alleged that the accused tied her to a tree and beat her up before forcing her to wear a garland of shoes around her neck. They also sprayed ink on her face, said the victim. A complaint has been registered under the Prohibition of Lynching Act.
“We have identified all the accused persons. One of them was already arrested. A probe into the matter has been initiated,” said the senior officer adding that the woman’s statement was taken through someone else as the victim is illiterate.
Meanwhile, the victim was taken to a local hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Another officer told the Indian Express that, “We are still investigating to know what caused such an assault to happen. The lady said she was assaulted while she was working in a field. The incident might have led to lynching. What actually happened is still under investigation.”
The villagers, however, allege that the woman had an illicit relationship with a man form the same area, who is currently in the police custody for murdering his wife.
