‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ Director Issues An Apology After The Japanese Warship Scene Controversy

Lee Min-Ho starrer, ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ has been making headlines, but for the wrong reasons. The recently released drama is set in the backdrop of two parallel universes i.e the first being Korea as a democracy and the second one being Korea as a monarchy. Just when the actors started garnering good reviews for their performances, the controversy on the warship scene arose.

The sixth episode featured a war between the kingdom of Korea and Japan. Although Lee Min Ho managed to mesmerize the audience with his good looks and acting skills in the war scene, some of the fans figured out what was wrong in that scene. The show’s viewers apparently pointed out that the buildings that were shown in the city of the Korean monarchy also has few architectural designs that of Japanese temples. And that’s how the controversy became the talk of the town. The director of the drama, Baek Sang-Hoon soon issued an apology and confessed that it was a mistake.

As per the latest report in AllKPop, Baek Sang-Hoon stated in his apology statement that, “I absolutely did not mean to depict a Korean warship as if it belonged to Japan. We began filming for this scene some time back in mid-January, and originally, we planned to complete the scene by open-sourcing reference materials. We made preparations to film our CG sources later toward the end of January overseas, before deciding to purchase any more necessary resources and go into 3D production. However, due to the COVID19 breakout, we were unable to travel overseas for reference filming. Later, the COVID19 situation worsened so that we could not even carry out necessary fillings in Korea. In the end, we sorted to purchasing reference materials for the 3D production.”

The director has also apparently confessed that he is a professional and thus, he couldn’t identify the different flags on the field, as he considered them all to be the same at first glimpse. “I sincerely apologize for causing viewers discomfort, due to my carelessness, failing to check necessary details, and using the current situation as an excuse to cover for my error… I will edit the controversial scenes in question as soon as possible so that there will be no more discomfort in the drama’s rerun episodes or VOD service content,” he concluded saying.
