An Indian origin man was shot dead by a teenager in the United States in a carjacking incident, relatives said. The deceased man identified as Sunil Edla (61) belonged to Telangana. The accused has been arrested.
A 16-year-old boy shot Edla, outside his residence in New Jersey’s Ventnor City. The incident is said to have taken place at 8 pm on November 15.
According to reports, Edla was supposed to travel to India in this month to visit his mother for her 95th birthday and celebrate the Christmas with his family. Edla was working as night auditor in hospitality industry in Atlantic City.
According to local media reports, Sunil was leaving his home to work the overnight shift when the teen shot him and escaped with his car. The victim died on the spot.
The police on Friday tracked the boy and arrested him. He has been charged with murder, robbery, carjacking, and unlawful possession of a handgun.
“He (Edla) was humble. He never argued. I helped him when he came to US in 1987. I was very close to him,” his cousin Raj Casula was quoted as saying in the report.
Sunil was a father of two and a grandfather was known for playing the piano at the local church in Atlantic City during services. He had been living in Atlantic County for 30 years. An autopsy report revealed that he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Sunil had migrated to the US in the year 1987.
