Teacher’s Day 2018: History, significance and importance of the day

Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 5 every year to express the love and gratitude we feel towards those from whom we have learnt life’s most important lessons. They may be your school teachers or college professors, or teachers in fields other than academics.

Why 5th September?

Teacher’s day is celebrated on this day because 5 September 1888 was the birth day of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. It is celebrated in his honour on his birth anniversary and not just him, but this day is for all the teacher’s out there.

History

Before getting into politics, Radhakrishnan was a teacher in various colleges even represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire and the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University.

The story goes to the time when he had entered politics, some old students wanted to celebrate his birthday to which he said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teacher’s Day.”

Significance:

Their role in any society is irreplaceable as the future of the students and in turn the nation’s is in their hands. They have a deep impact on the students who are going to future leaders. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had been a teacher himself and thus realised how important is the role of a teacher.
