Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza pilot Bangladesh to 48-run victory
Bangladesh defeated the West Indies in the first of the three-match ODI series by 48 runs on Sunday. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan scored a record double-century to take Bangladesh to a healthy total of 279 for four. In reply West Indies could manage only 231 for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs.
Tamim Iqbal clinched the man of the match award for his blistering unbeaten knock of 130 runs, highest by a Bangladeshi in ODIs against the West Indies. Shakib Al Hasan fell agonisingly three run short of the magical figure but ensured that the visitors were well placed for a late onslaught. Mushfiqur Rahim capitalised on the start provided by the top order and smashed bowlers all around the park with a quick fire 30 in just 11 deliveries.
“For those of us who were involved in the Test series it mattered to us to come out here fighting and I am glad we did that,” Tamim said.

Mashrafe Mortaza picked four for 37 in his 10 overs to ensure that the hosts don’t get any near to the target.
“It was important for us to make a strong statement here after the way we played in the Tests. This ground has been a happy one for us over the years and we are looking now to clinch the series in the next match on Wednesday”, Mashrafe said after the victory at Guyana’s National Stadium.
West Indies looked comfortable till the point where Chris Gayle was run out on the score of 40. Though the culprit Hetmyer top scored with 52 runs, it wasn’t enough to take them home.
“We didn’t help ourselves at all with poor work in the field and our death bowling wasn’t the best either. We need to redouble our efforts and come back for what is now a must-win situation for us.”, said Jason Holder.
Brief scores: Bangladesh 279/4 in 50 overs (Tamim Iqbal 130*, Shakib Al Hasan 97, Devendra Bishoo 2-52) beat West indies 231/9 in 50 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 52, Mashrafe Mortaza 4-37) by 48 runs.
