Tamil Nadu Rains: 15 Killed as Houses Collapse in Coimbatore; Schools & Colleges Shut
The weather department has sounded a heavy rain alert and flood alert in the states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The educational institutions in the two states have been shut for Monday. The examinations of Madras University and Anna University have also been postponed. Schools are closed in Chennai, Tuticorin, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram today. Holiday has also been declared in Puducherry schools.
Three people have died in the last few days in the rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu. 15 people are feared killed after three houses collapsed in Coimbatore due to heavy rain. The deceased included two children aged 7. Rescue operations are on to help the people trapped in debris in Nadur village near Mettupalayam.
A flood alert has been sounded to villagers on the banks of the Sankarabarani river in Puducherry. The alert comes in the wake of the decision of the Tamil Nadu government to release water from the dam in Villupuram district located in neighboring Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Tamil Nadu revenue and disaster management minister RB Udhayakumar said that nearly 800 people have been evacuated from low lying areas in Cuddalore district.
The Met Office has predicted more showers in the next two days. Fishermen are advised not to venture in the seas due to high winds and heavy rainfall.
State minister Vijayabaskar visited the flood-affected areas in Pudukottai district and was overseeing relief operation.
