Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram got a relief from the Supreme Court on Monday to travel abroad. The apex court allowed Karti to visit United Kingdom, France and the United States of America from July 23 to 31, reminding him to abide by the conditions imposed in an earlier similar order.
The bench, chaired by the Chief Justice Dipak Misra allowed Karti to visit foreign countries for personal reasons after senior advocate A M Singhvi submitted the plea. However, the bench, comprising of Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, gave permission to Karti, accused in cases like Aircel-Maxis, INX media and money laundering matters, said that as soon as he returns from his foreign tours, he will have to submit his passport with the Enforcement Directorate.
Though, in the previous order the bench disallowed him to travel abroad, but with this recent permission Karti would be able to visit foreign nations, provided that he would not open or close any bank account abroad. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was of the opinion that previous order should be allowed to remain in force, which was granted in the court.
The bench had directed Karti to file an undertaking to submit his travel details to the court, which includes his travelling details.
