Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri has added another feather to his cap. He has surpassed Argentina’s Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goal-scorer with 74 strikes. Chhetri achieved this feat after he scored a brace against Bangladesh. This was during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at Al Sadd Club in Doha.
Sunil Chhetri the seasoned striker, now stands only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the active international goal-scorers list. UAE’s Ali Mabkhout is third on the list having scored 73 goals.
All India Football Federation President Praful Patel congratulated Chhetri for becoming the second-highest active international goalscorer.
Abhishek Bachchan also congratulated the footballer on Twitter. He wrote, Congratulations @chetrisunil11True Indian legend!! Well done cap.
Chhetri’s win meant India register their first win in six years in World Cup qualifiers. It was also India’s first victory in World Cup qualifiers away from home in 20 years. With this win, India rose to the third spot in Group E with six points from seven games.
India will next lock horns against Afghanistan in the Qualifiers on June 15.
