The Patiala House Court on Saturday directed the Delhi Police to hand over certain documents to Shashi Tharoor pertaining to his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death. The court said that the electronic evidence produced in the court by the prosecution was not in good condition.
Assuring to provide fresh copies, public prosecutor Atul Srivastava — representing the Delhi Police — told that the fresh copies will be given to Thiruvananthapuram parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor. Following which, the court will fix the date of the next hearing on December 1.
The order was passed by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal. The certain documents which were produced in the court — as an evidence — contain statements of several witnesses recorded in the case.
Tharoor’s wife — Sunanda Pushkar — was found dead in a suite of a luxury hotel in the national capital on the night of January 17, 2014.
The couple was reportedly staying in the hotel as the official bungalow, allotted to them, was being renovated at that time.
The court had directed Delhi Police to hand over various documents filed along with the charge sheet, including statements of witnesses to Tharoor on a plea moved by him.
Tharoor was granted regular bail on July 7 after he appeared before the court in pursuance to the summons issued against him. The court had on June 5 summoned him, observing there was sufficient ground to proceed against him.
He has been charged under sections 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), but has not been arrested in the case.
A BJP leader Rajeev Babbar filed the complaint against Tharoor’s alleged “scorpion” remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that his religious sentiments were hurt by his statement. Meanwhile, Tharoor termed it as “frivolous” and alleged that it was an attempt to “throttle the freedom of expression.”
