Stree review: This Shraddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao starrer is high on laughter
Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee
Director: Amar Kaushik
Genre: Horror-Comedy
The story is set in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh based on a premise that the town experiences strange things during the annual pooja nights. The villagers believe that the a female ghosts walks around the village and it’s adjoining areas watching over men who stay out late and if someone turns back when she calls out to them, only the clothes are found, not the man.
Since this is the first time that Bollywood has come up a different genre altogether, its a commendable job on the part of the director. The spooky Stree provides thrills and laughs in equal measure.
In the first half, a lovelorn tailor falls for a girl. The ‘Stree’ Shraddha Kapoor wants a ghagra-choli to wear to a puja and he is an accomplished tailor. The love-lorn tailor is mesmerised and agrees to deliver her order within a couple of days.
The banter between the three friends and their guru, Rudro(Pankaj) keeps you laughing throughout so much so that your stomach hurts during the interval but post that, the film becomes slow-paced. There are eerie bits too which will leave you uncomfortable.
The film is also conveys an important social message on gender equality as Shraddha Kapoor watches over men who stay out late.
The celebrities have also wished the film well and today also happens to be Rajkummar Rao’s birthday. Veteran actor Anil Kapoor took to Twitter to wish the film and the actor.
Happy Birthday to the actor who’s on the road to great success at full speed, a gem of a person and my dear friend @RajkummarRao !! All the best for #Stree! Movie releasing on your birthday has to be a good sign always! Keep doing what you do! pic.twitter.com/wnBNYNhlLC
