More than 200 injured and 50 people have been killed in 6 serial blasts that rocked Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. Three of the explosions took place in Catholic churches where Easter services were underway and three other explosions were reported in five-star hotels. The cause of the attack is still unknown.
At least six explosions were recorded at churches and hotels on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka.Sri Lankan police told Reuters more than 50 were killed. A hospital spokesman said 283 were wounded.
As reported by CBS News, A security official said they suspect the blasts at two churches were carried out by a suicide bomber. The blasts appeared to have targeted religious places and the economy as per the local media report. An official at the Batticaloa hospital told AFP more than 300 people had been admitted with injuries following the blast there.
The report further added that, the first blast ripped through St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo. A second explosion was reported at St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo, a Catholic majority town north of Colombo. The blasts have been reported at churches in Kochchikade, Katuwapitiya and Batticaloa. Three separate explosions have also been reported at the Shangri La, the Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels, all in central Colombo. The injured also included foreigners staying at the three five-star hotels.
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said that the injured were being evacuated while security forces have cordoned off the areas and search operations are underway.
Security in the capital and the airport has been stepped up following the blasts.
New reports suggest that 168 are dead and more than 300 are injured the count can go high.
