Defending champion Sharad Kumar broke the inter-continental record in high jump T42/63 category to win his second successive gold at the 2018 Asian Para Games on Thursday.
World Championships silver-medallist, Kumar bettered the Games and Asiad record with a jump of 1.90m to bag the top honours. Rio Paralympic bronze medallist Varun Bhati claimed the silver with a jump of 1.82m – his seasonal best. Olympic gold medallist Thangavelu Mariyappan settled for the bronze with a jump of 1.67m.
The T42/63 category covers the lower limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power and impaired range of movement, reported news agency PTI.
Earlier, Javelin thrower Sundar-Singh Gurjar clinched a silver in the men’s F46 category. Gurjar claimed made an effort of 61.33m in his fifth attempt, while another Indian Rinku won the bronze as India dominated the podium in the Javelin event. Rinku scored his personal best of 60.92m.
Avnil Kumar also claimed a bronze in the men’s 400m T13 category with a timing of 52 sec.
Meanwhile, India continued its splendid performance in the other track-and-field events. Anandan Gunasekram won the silver in the men’s 400m silver in the T44, 62/64 classification, while Vinay Kumar settled for a bronze. In the other category of the 400m (T45/46/47) Sandeep Maan won the bronze medal.
In the women’s category, Jayanti Behera won a silver in the 400m T45/46/47 category. While Radha Venkatesh settled for the bronze.
