March 23rd marks the death anniversary of three young freedom fighters- Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. These three legendary freedom fighters’ name is known by almost every Indian. The three of them were hanged to death by the Britishers. Sacrificing their lives while being a part of India’s mission towards freedom, they inspired many young Indians. This day is celebrated as the Martyr’s Day in remembrance of their death anniversary.
Why Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged?
After the shocking assassination of Indian activist Lala Lajpat Rai, the three freedom fighters -Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Azad who were inspired by him wanted to seek justice for the brutal killing of their idol. Forming an union in contrast to Gandhi’s non-violent moment, Singh, Rajguru and Azad threw bombs over the Central Legislative Assembly on April 8, 1929. Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were arrested in no time in charges of murder. They were hanged on March 23, 1931 at the Lahore Jail. Their cremation ceremony was performed at the banks of the Sutlej River.
