Sanjay Nirupam defends remark on Narendra Modi; says PM is not god
Defending his controversial comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, by calling him “anpadh-gawaar” (uneducated and uncouth), Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam said that the words he used were “not undignified”. He also stated that in a democracy ‘Prime Minister is not God.”
The Congress leader had criticised the Maharashtra government’s decision to screen a short film on the prime minister’s life at schools. Speaking to a news channel on Thursday, Nirupam had said, “The decision to force the film’s screening is wrong. Children should be kept away from politics. What will students learn from watching a film on an uneducated and illiterate person like (prime minister) Modi.”
Jo bachhe school, college mein padh rahe hain woh Modi jaise unpadh-gawaar ke baare mein jaan kar unko kya milne wala hai? Yeh bahut sharmnaak baat hai ki aaj tak humare desh ke nagrik aur bacchhon ko pata hi nahi hai ki PM ki degree kitni hai? Sanjay Nirupam, Congress in Mumbai pic.twitter.com/ugUHHvukm8

Nirupam further mockingly said, “Children and people do not know how many degrees the prime minister holds.” He was of the opinion that India is a democratic country and Bharatiya Janata Party should not object to every word. He went on to say that “in a democracy, the prime minister is not God”, reports PTI.

Reacting on the comments, BJP leaders like Shaina NC called Mr Nirupam “mentally deranged.” She took to twitter and wrote, “Yet another obnoxious comment by a mentally deranged @sanjaynirupam . May be he forgets that @narendramodi is elected by 125 cr Indians who aren’t “unpad or gavar”.@INCIndia is devoid of ideology and relevant questions. Sure citizens will give a befitting reply in 2019 (sic).”

The whole controversy revolves around the decision of Maharashtra government ordering schools to screen a short film on PM Modi next week. This 32-minute film — Chalo Jeete Hai — is based on the early years of PM Modi and will be screened on Tuesday. The government claims that this movie has a “social message”.
