RSS to Centre: Fulfill the promise made by Congress govt in 1994

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) appealed to the central government to fulfil the promise made by the Congress government back in 1994 to the Supreme Court. BJP’s political mentor said that the government then agreed to take the Hindu community’s side if any proof of a pre-existing temple was found which was razed to build the Babri Masjid.

RSS joint general secretary Manmohan Vaidya while speaking at a function said that the building of Ram Temple was not only limited to the Hindu and Muslim communities. He spoke after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat inaugurated Akhil Bharatiya Karyakari Mandal Baithak of the organisation at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini in Mumbai suburb Bhayander.

“The court has said a mosque is not mandatory for namaz and the prayers can be performed on the streets as well. Besides, namaz is not accepted if it is performed on a forcibly acquired land. The court has also said that this (acquiring of land) was not a religious deed,” Vaidya said.

It was on Monday, the top court said that it would start hearing the matter in January next year and triggered claims from within the BJP and RSS ranks to make a law for an early construction of the temple on the disputed site.

The Congress said that all parties should respect the court verdict and BJP maintained that it would honour the court verdict.

Vaidya said that back in 1994, when there was a Congress government at the Centre, Supreme Court received an affidavit from the solicitor general which stated that the government would side with the sentiments of the Hindus.

“Now, we have the evidence…Also, this issue has long been pending in the court without a decision. The issue is now only that of acquiring the land and handing it over for the construction of the temple,” Vaidya said.
