The iconic RK Studios, set up scratch by the legendary Raj Kapoor is up for sale. The decision to sell the historical place, located in Mumbai’s Chembur suburb, was taken up by the Kapoor family which includes Raj Kapoor’s wife Krishna Raj Kapoor, his sons Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor and his daughters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain.
Confirming the news, late Raj Kapoor’s youngest son Rishi Kapoor told the Mumbai Mirror, “The investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. Even before the fire, for years RK Studio had become a huge white elephant, toting up losses.”
On being asked whether Ranbir Kapoor would be interested to buy it, Rishi Kapoor that it is up to him to decide. Rishi also added that Ranbir has a long career ahead of him and he too wants him to focus on that. Though Ranbir had previously had shared his desire to buy the RK Studios, there is no conformity on the issue as of yet.
Stating the reason for selling the iconic studio, Rishi stated that the number of bookings had decreased substantially over the years with producers preferring studios near Goregaon and Andheri. He added that Chembur was no longer seen as a lucrative shooting space as it was back in the 40s and 50s. Adding on, he shared that even the handful of clients using the studios had started demanding free parking space, air-conditioning and discounts. This further added to the losses he said.
Meanwhile, several developers and builders have been approached till now and the process is on.
