From screen writing to politics, M Karunanidhi influenced Tamil Nadu for more than fifty years. Kalaignar breathed his last on 7 August, at the age of 94.
Tamil Nadu has lost a major personality who was a screenwriter for more than 40 films. Then emerged as a politician and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He ruled Tamil Nadu as the chief minister for five separate terms.
The Tamil Nadu government announced a public holiday on Wednesday. The state will observe a seven-day mourning as a mark of respect for the former chief minister.

Kauvery Hospital declared his death reason saying, “With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi at 6.10pm on August 7, 2018. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond. We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide.”
According to the medical bulletin, the time of death was 6.10 pm. His health had seen a significant decline in the last 24 hours due to multi-organ failure. As witnessed in the press release, doctors stated that despite maximum medical support, he could not be resuscitated.
