‘Ramayan’ breaks all records, becomes the most-watched show in the world
Doordarshan's mythological show 'Ramayan' has now become the most-watched show with 7.7 crore viewers.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, PM Narendra addressed the nation and announced for a lockdown in India, thus, to entertain the audience, the government chose to re-telecast the mythological series of the 80s- ‘Ramayan’ and ‘Mahabharat’ on public demand, that aired on March 28, 2020.
Now, ‘Ramayan‘ became the world’s most-watched show on April 16 with 7.7 crore viewership. This news was posted by DD India’s official Twitter handle last night, the caption read, “Rebroadcast of #Ramayana on #Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April.”

Written and directed by Ramanand Sagar, the show ‘Ramayana’ starred Arun Govil as Ram and Deepika Chikhalia as Sita, with Arvind Trivedi performing Raavan and Dara Singh essaying Hanuman. The series basically ran from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988. Then, every Sunday, at 9.30 a.m. the show was aired on TV.
A report in IANS states, ‘Ramayan’ became the most-watched serial in the world from 1987 to 1988. It remained recorded in the Limca Book of Records as “the most-watched mythological serial in the world” till June 2003. It is based on Valmiki’s ‘Ramayana’ and Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas, the show has a sum of 78 episodes.
Well, it is quite impressive that the 80’s iconic mythological show is still watched by many across the world.
