Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020. The political leader passed away at a hospital in Singapore. He was 64.
Singh had been admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for the last seven months. He was undergoing treatment there.
The Samajwadi leader had earlier undergone a kidney transplant. As per a Mumbai Mirror report Singh was in the intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
His family members were by his side.
Amar Singh was the former general secretary of the Samajwadi Party. He shared a good bond with party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. However, in 2010, Amar Singh and his protege, actor Jaya Prada, resigned from the Samajwadi Party.
Amar Singh was first elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996. After being expelled by the Samajwadi Party in 2010, he was elected to Rajya Sabha again in 2016. This time as an independent member but with support from the Samajwadi Party.
Amar Singh was quite close to the Bachchan family. But in 2016 the friendship was strained when he complained against Jaya Bachchan, a Samajwadi Party leader. In February, he released a video expressing “regret” over his behaviour towards Amitabh Bachchan & family.
We express our condolences to his family and loved ones. May His soul rest in peace.
