Petrol and diesel prices on Wednesday, May 12 were hiked once again adding to the common man’s woes amid the coronavirus crisis. The fuel prices touched an all-time high after Indian Oil Corporation hiked prices for the third straight day. Petrol price was hiked by a steep 25-27 paise per litre, diesel by 33 paise for a litre, according to the chart released by state-owned fuel retailers. This was the seventh increase in prices since May 4.
Here is the price difference of diesel and petrol in four metro cities on May 12, 2021:
1. In Delhi, a litre of petrol costs Rs 91.80 whereas a litre of diesel is priced at Rs 82.36.
2. A litre of petrol is being sold at Rs 98. 36 in Mumbai while a litre of diesel is being sold at Rs 89.75.
3. One litre of petrol is available at Rs 92.16 in Kolkata while Diesel costs Rs 85.45
4. In Chennai a litre of petrol costs Rs 93.84 whereas Diesel costs Rs 87.49.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges. Central and state taxes make up for 60% of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54% of diesel. The union government levies Rs 32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 31.80 on diesel.
The Oil prices settled higher after a major US fuel pipeline said it could largely restart within the week after a cyberattack forced its shutdown.
