Peter Mayhew known for his role of Chewbacca in Star Wars took his last breath on April 30 at his home in Boyd, Texas. He was 74 at the time of his death. The cause of his death was not immediately announced. The actor who was 7 foot and 2 inches tall had mobility issues in recent years and in 2018 underwent spinal surgery. Mayhew originated the role of Chewbacca, in the original Star Wars trilogy and returned for Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens.
His family released a statement about the same, on his Twitter account.
Post the announcement, friend and co-star Mark Hammill paid tribute to him.
Hammill said, “He was the gentlest of a giants-A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly-I’m grateful for the memories we shared & I’m a better man for just having known him.” Joonas Suotamo, who played his role in a few installments also paid a tribute. He said, “Peter’s guidance and kindness have been invaluable gifts which warmed my spirit and prepared me for this journey. I aspire to make Peter proud and bring Star Wars fans the Chewie they know and love.”
Mayhew is survived by his wife Mary Angelique and their three kids. Apart from the Star Wars series, he was seen in movies such as Terror, Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy and Yesterday Was a Lie among others.
