Former cricketer turned politician Imran Khan of Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf (PTI) is leading in the race for the post of becoming the next premier of the country. Though allegations of rigging and massive delays in counting of votes dominated the political arena, initial results predict Imran to captain the ship of Pakistan.
Getting a clear edge over Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan’s People party-Parliamentarians (PPP-P), Khan’s PTI has scored in 119 seats, while PML-N and PPP are trailing at 61 and 40 seats respectively. Supporter of the ace politician have already started the celebrations, however no statement or even a tweet has been shared by the PTI chief.
Dawn report states that PTI’s spokesperson Naeemul Haque had claimed that Imran Khan would address the nation at 2 pm today, with the entire countrymen cheering for him. Haque was of the opinion that trends shows the support of people who chose ‘good over evil’.
As per to AFP, the voter turnout was between 50-55 percent, with nearly 106 million exercised their voting rights. But, DAWN reports only 47 percent of voting took place. The daily further reports that the voting percentage is similar to the one that was in 2003.
With PML-N chief and former premier Nawaz Sharif behind bars and PPP-P’s Bilawal Bhutto Khan too young to lead the nation, PTI’s Imran Khan becomes then most favourable choice for the throne. It needs to pointed out that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) too had extended their support to Imran Khan.
It would be interesting to see, if Khan gets a majority to form the government alone or will need the support of individuals (leading in 50 seats) to prove the majority, which stands at 137.
Not only Pakistan, India too is keeping an eye at the elections results closely. It is speculated that if Khan becomes the Premier, relationship with the neighbouring nations would improve and there would be a cap on the terrorists activities.
