Netflix to launch a cheap monthly mobile subscription for India
You can get Netflix for ₹250 a month but only on mobile in India
Netflix Inc has a treat for Indian viewers, they are all set to roll out a new lower-priced plan in India but only for mobiles. This announcement is a part of its quarterly results, in which it reported lower-than-expected subscriber additions. They are looking forward to tapping into a price-sensitive market where data consumption on mobiles is on an increase.
Netflix currently offers three monthly plans that are priced between Rs 500 to Rs.800. They are at present testing an Rs. 250 monthly subscription for Indian subscribers where data plans are among the cheapest in the world.
The Management said, “We believe this plan … will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU is low.”
This move by Netflix is aimed at battling the cheap subcriptions offered by Hot Star and Amazon’s Prime Video. A video streaming platform owned by Walt Disney Co’s India unit.
India figures prominently in Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings’ global expansion plans.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “We’ve been seeing nice steady increases in engagement with our Indian viewers that we think we can keep building on. Growth in that country is a marathon, so we’re in it for the long haul.”
The Netflix original shows such as ‘Sacred Games’ and ‘Delhi Crime’ with A-list Bollywood actors are much loved by fans. The second season of “Sacred Games” is set to release in August.
The Rs. 299 plan will surely have maximum numbers of Indian’s opting for the subscription.
