In yet another incident of mob lynching, a 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death on Friday night by a group of people on suspicion that he was smuggling cows in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, the police said.

The deceased, Akbar Khan and his acquaintance Aslam Khan were walking with two cows when they were surrounded by villagers and thrashed on the allegation that they were smuggling cows to another village.

Although Aslam managed to escape, Akbar was brutally lynched to death.

Police on arriving immediately rushed him to the nearest government hospital in Ramgarh, but doctors declared Akbar brought death. The body has now been kept in a mortuary and an investigation on the case has been launched.

“We retrieved two cows and sent to a nearby gaushala. We have also registered an FIR under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention),” police officer Subhash Sharma said.

Rajasthan chief-minister Vasundhara Raje condemned the incident and also assured punishment against the offenders.

“The incident of alleged lynching of a person transporting bovines in Alwar district is condemnable. Strictest possible action shall be taken against the perpetrators,” she tweeted.

Akbar’s death comes just four days after the Supreme Court had instructed the legislature to enact a new penal provision to deal with mob lynchings.

It has been just over a year since Pehlu Khan, 55, was beaten to death by cow vigilantes in Alwar when he amd four others were transporting cows in vehicles on April 1.
