Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unleashed the model of coaches for Mumbai Metro line-3 (MML-3), on this Friday. This would be Mumbai’s only underground metro which will connect Colaba, Bandra, and Seepz. The Metro-3 line will be called the ‘Aqua-Line’.
The project of Mumbai’s Metro line-3 was inaugurated in the presence of Ashwini Bhide, the Managing Director of MMRCL. Taking to Twitter, the metro department said the Mumbai Metro Line 3 will be known as the Aqua Line as the exterior and interior of the train is well suited to the theme.
According to reports, 31 trains of eight coaches will be manufactured by Alstom India and Alstom SA under the Make in India initiative at Alstom’s facility located in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.
“As a tribute to the city which never sleeps, the Metro train car design is inspired by the vital flow of water. This line will offer a fast, efficient and sustainable mode of travel, which will become another lifeline for the citizens of Mumbai. Mostly Mumbaiites turn to the sea for peace, get soothed by its wave and breeze,” the MMRC said in a statement issued on Friday. “To keep this spirit alive, the color scheme of the rolling stock will have a unique blend of comfort (beige) and freshness (aqua green), which will provide a relaxed and refreshing travel experience. The color combination for the exterior and interior of the rolling stock is in consonance with the same.”
According to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) which tweeted images of the new model coaches for the Metro line-3, the new metro trains would have features like driverless train operations, air-conditioning, LCD screens, digital map indicator, fire extinguisher, smoke detectors and voice communicators for emergency purposes.
Also, the 33.5-km corridor will have an underwater tunnel below the Mithi river. In the beginning, the driverless train will be operated manually. The Metro-3 is expected to get fully operational by the end of 2021. It will carry more than 15 lakh passengers daily, according to estimations of MMRC. The project has got funding from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
