On Sunday i.e. October 11, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray made the announcement of shifting metro 3 car shade to Kanjurmag. While addressing the state in a video, CM revealed about revival area for the Aarey colony, which is now 800 acres. Earlier it was 600 acres.
Metrorail project for building the car shed had attracted an outrage by state people last year. Netizens were seen protesting street to save the trees. The BJP-ruled Maharashtra government last year wanted to cut down 2,700 trees to build the shed. However, the decision of the government was opposed by the environmental activists. Uddhav Thackrey today said in a video post, “This uncertainty situation over the metro car shed is over now. Biodiversity in Aarey needs to be to protected. There is an 800-acre jungle in an urban set-up… Mumbai has natural forest cover.” He also stated that the constructed property in Aarey would be used for some other public purpose.
The Environment Minister, son of Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya had campaigned to save the trees of Aarey last year. Few months back he had said that the protesters had fought for the future of the planet and that the rights of Adivasi communities that call Aarey home would be protected. In a tweet post today, he shared, “Aarey Saved!”.
