A 28-year-old man identified by the police as Salman Shaikh, a resident of Byculla was arrested by the Azad Maidan police for stabbing his girlfriend 14 times at Oval Maidan on July 30. He was presented before the court on August 1 and remanded in police custody for seven days.
Salman Shaikh, a food delivery boy by profession, killed Nasrin, 22, who worked at a restaurant in Fort, on the suspicion of her cheating on him. “Salman came in touch with Nasreen Umar Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra, when she was working with Chai Pe Charcha Café in Fort,” said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.
After investigation it is revealed, Salman is already married and has a son. The officers further revealed that three months after the culmination of this clandestine relation between them, Salman became obsessed with Nasrin. He even helped Nasreen when her father, Umar Mohammed Shaikh, a scrap dealer, was ill, stated the police.
When Shaikh was arrested by the officials, they said the couple had been fighting for the past two days only because Nasrin’s phone was engaged at 11.30pm on Saturday, when Salman tried to call her. Later when the couple met at Azad Maidan, Salman stabbed Nasrin in the stomach and back several times in a feat of rageand then fled from the scene.

“After killing her, he went home in Byculla but he could not sleep. He then called Umar and asked him if Nasreen had returned home. When Umar said no, Salman went to Mumbra and accompanied Umar to Mumbra police station where they wanted to lodge a missing person complaint, but they were directed to the Colaba police station,” said an official from Azad Maidan police station.
They were then directed to the Azad Maidan police station as the area where Nasreen worked, falls under their jurisdiction. Whilst on their way to Azad Maidan, Umar and Salman saw a crowd near Oval Maidan, police said.
The police had been alerted about a woman lying in an injured condition at Azad Maidan following which a team of Azad Maidan Police rushed to the spot and found the woman unconscious with deep injuries on her stomach and other parts of the body.
“We came to know about the body around 6 am on Tuesday, and around 7 am Umar and Salman were walking near Oval Maidan. Umar immediately identified his daughter and claimed the body in GT Hospital where a post-mortem was conducted,” said a police official.
“Later Umar told us that he suspected Salman’s hand in the murder. We examined Salman and found blood on his legs. On questioning, Salman admitted his crime. He told us that he stabbed Nasreen with a knife as he suspected her of having an affair. He said he spent a lot of money on her,” said an official from Azad Maidan police station.
DCP Abhishek Trimukhe of Zone I confirmed that Salman has been arrested. He will be soon produced in court, Trimukhe added.
