DB Marg police have arrested two people for assaulting a police officer at Grant Road on Saturday night. The officer assaulted belonged to the DB Marg police station.
According to the police, Deepak Davre, a constable was patrolling near Queen Mary School at the Grand Road at around 8 pm when he saw two men fighting on the road. Trying to stop them, Davre intervened but was instead beaten up by them.
The accused duo have since then been arrested and identified as Mohammad Shaikh, a resident of Sakinaka and Mohammed Razzak Shaikh, who comes from Nagpada.
We arrested Shaikh and Razzak for assaulting a public servant, for deterring him from performing his duties and intentionally insulting him under sections 353, 332 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code [IPC],” an officer from the DB Marg police station was quoted as saying by The Hindustan Times.
The constable had approached them asking them to stop the argument and let the traffic move as they were quarrelling in the middle of the road. But instead of obeying Davre, the accused started hurling abuses at him and then beat him up.
But when Davre asked them to stop, warning them that otherwise, he will have to arrest them, Shaikh held Davre’s collar and started beating him up. He even tore the constable’s shirt and also broke his whistle.
Somehow, Davre managed to inform the control room using his walkie-talkie and called for immediate back-up even as Shaikh kept on hitting him.
The control room then informed the DB Marg police station, who send police constables patrolling in nearby areas to rescue Davre. They eventually took him to the hospital with the constable suffering severe face and arm injuries.
