This new year eve the Mumbai Traffic police have done away with a breath analyser. They will be doing a blood test on those suspected of drink driving. If the tests come positive If found positive, not only the driver but all the others travelling with him will be booked.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. It carries a punishment up to 6 months and/or a fine of up to Rs 10,000 in case of a first-time offence.
The traffic police have revealed that the others who are travelling in the car can also be booked. This is under Section 188 of the Motor vehicle Act (MV) Act. This section makes the person responsible as they permitted the person to drive. Therefore they have abetted the crime.
Praveen Padwal, Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police said, “We will take action against those who violate the rules on December 31. A total of 3,000 cops will be deployed on the roads for checking. The traffic cops will also be there during the nakabandi by the Mumbai Police and will take action on vehicles flouting traffic rules.”
Not only Mumbai a similar drive will take place in Thane too.
Drunk driving cases increase during New Year’s eve.
Night curfew has been imposed in Mumbai from 11 pm to 6 am. It will remain in force till January 5. People can celebrate till 11 pm. Strict action will be taken against them if they cross the deadline.
