The demise of veteran Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen has left an unfillable void in the world of films. Mrinal Sen breathed his last today at his Kolkata residence, he was 95. According to reports, Sen died of cardiac arrest. He was born on May 14, 1923 in Faridpur, which now falls in Bangladesh.
From President Ram Nath Kovind to Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, Sen’s demise was condoled by many on microblogging site Twitter. Big-B Amitabh Bachchan also took to Twitter to express his sorrow at the demise of the legendary Bengali filmmaker. He also revealed that he did his first-ever voiceover in Sen’s National Award-winning film Bhuvan Shome.
Bachchan wrote on Twitter, “Mrinal Sen no more .. a most amiable, distinguished creative cinematic mind , contemporary of Satyajit Ray and Rithik Ghatak.. I did my first ever voice over in his film BHUVAN SHOME .. prayers and condolences. (sic)”
It is to be noted that Sen was popularly known for films like Bhuvan Shome, Mrigayaa, Akaler Sandhane, Akash Kusum and Antareen. He, along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, brought Bengali parallel cinema on the global stage.
Expressing sadness over Sen’s demise, President Ram Nath Kovind mourned the loss saying that “Sad to learn of the passing of acclaimed film-maker Mrinal Sen. From Bhuvan Shome to the Calcutta trilogy, his penetrating and sensitive portrayal of social realities made him a fine chronicler of our times. A loss to Bengal, to India and to the world of cinema.”
Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister has also condoled his demise. “Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family,” she wrote.
