Mohan Bhagwat alters stance, says homosexuality not a crime

Changing the stance for the first time, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Wednesday agreed that homosexuality is not a crime. This came days after the Supreme Court judgement where it scrapped a part of the 157-year-old Section 377 allowing consensual gay sex between adults. However, the Hindutva outfit was sceptical on the compatibility issues but stuck to its own stance that ‘it is against nature’.

Delivering his concluding speech at the Bhavishya ka Bharat – an RSS perspective on Wednesday, Mohan Bhagwat said, “Times are changing and the society has to take a call on such issues.” Stressing on the need to debate on such issues, he also pointed to other issues which need similar seriousness.

The latest comments made by the RSS chief was welcomed by the people on social media too, as he represents the voice of the ideology of the ‘Hindu’ community in the country. Reacting to the statement, a Twitter user wrote, “Glad he’s stated it very clearly, accepting the changing social realities and respecting the Supreme Court judgement.”

It is to be known that Supreme Court on September 6, had announced that the gay sex will be legal in India. Along with it, the bench led by CJI Dipak Misra by overruling its own 2013 decision, observed that 157-year-old British-era ban on consensual gay sex was irrational, indefensible and arbitrary.
