The Mizo National Front (MNF) declared names of 39 candidates for the 40 Assembly seats in the state. Barring Tuichawng assembly seat within the Chakma autonomous district council (CADC) area, the party had issued the names for all the constituencies. Former CM Zoramthanga will contest from Aizawl East-I assembly constituency.
The MNF — formed by BJP in 2016 — is a political coalition under the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). However, it is to be known that BJP and MNF are both contesting the Assembly polls separately this time.
The regional party, considered an ally of the saffron front, is not fielding any candidate from CADC area on the appeal of the NGO Coordination. The NGO in its appeal had requested no to field candidates belonging to the Chakma community. According a report, published in the Indian Express, Robert Hmingthansanga will be contesting from West Tuipui seat in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district. Hmingthansanga is going to contest for the seat where Chakmas are a majority. Also it is for the first time that the party has fielded 17 first timers for the upcoming polls.
Making the announcement of the candidates from the Vanapa Hall in Aizawl, MNF stated that senior vice president Tawnluia would contest from Tuichang seat in Myanmar border Champhai district, while party’s vice president Dr R Lalthangliana would file his nomination from south Tuipui seat in Lunglei district.
Among the other major names, circulating in the news is of the party treasurer Vanlalzawma, who would contest from Aizawl West-III seat. R Lalzirliana — resigned from Congress — would contest from home Tur-Tawi constituency in Aizawl district on a MNF ticket.
Similarly, former Congress minister Lalrinliana Sailo — resigned as legislator on 3rd October — would contest on MNF ticket from Chalfilh seat in Aizawl district. In this election, the party has given tickets to four candidates with doctoral degrees and two candidates with medical degree holders.
Mizoram will go for polls on November 28 and the results will be announced on December 11, along with the results of four other states.
