I dream to see an Indian athlete win an Olympic gold – Milkha Singh

Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh on Monday said that it was his dream to see an Indian win a gold medal in athletics at the Olympic Games.

Talking to the students, the ‘Flying Sikh’ – as Milkha is fondly known – share a story from his childhood recalling his struggles when the country was torn by religious violence on the aftermaths of partition. He also shared his experience of the famous two-man race that took place in Pakistan in 1960, where he successfully defeated his neighbouring country athlete Abdul Khaliq.

“No matter who becomes our Prime Minister, no one can completely eradicate poverty from the country. We as citizens need to contribute and do our bit in the eradication of poverty and development of our nation,” he added.

Mr. Singh as reported by the news agency, also inaugurated the indoor sports complex of the University, which will be named after him as the Milkha Singh Sports Complex.

Mentioning the youth as the future of the nation, he asked the students to work hard and bring glory to the country. Hard work is even more important than competence, he said.
