#MeToo: Maneka Gandhi says public hearings will be conducted on sexual harassment cases
Union Minister Maneka Gandhi announced that the government will conduct public hearings after forming a panel of its own to address the sexual harassment cases which came to light following the #MeToo movement. The panel will comprise four retired judged. The movement has taken the entire country by storm.
“I believe in the pain and trauma behind every single complaint. Cases of sexual harassment at work must be dealt with a policy of zero tolerance,” according to a statement.

Maneka Gandhi was first from the current dispensation to speak up on the issue and categorically said sexual harassment cases may be tried even after 10-15 years after the incident. She also expressed her happiness for the women who mustered courage and voice their concerns.
“You will always remember the person who did it, which is why we have written to the Law Ministry that complaints should be without any time limit,” she was quoted as saying on Monday.
“You can now complain 10-15 years later, doesn’t matter how much later. If you’re going to complain the avenue is still open,” she said, adding that “anger at sexual molestation never goes away”.
The #MeToo movement rose to prominence when actor Tanushree Dutta accused fellow veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment during a shoot about a decade ago. This incident sparked off an instant debate and blame game ensued on the social media. Since celebrities, actors, journalists came forward to share their experiences making the matter murkier.
